Root canal treatment is one of the most commonly performed dental procedures in the country, yet it remains one of the most misunderstood. For decades, it carried a reputation for being painful and unpleasant. The reality today is quite different. With modern anesthetic techniques, advanced technology, and the expertise of a trained endodontist, root canal therapy is a routine, comfortable procedure that most patients compare to having a cavity filling placed.
At Salinas Endodontics, root canal treatment is what we do every single day. Dr. Malek brings advanced speciality training and dedicated experience to every case, allowing her to diagnose and treat complex cases with precision and care. Our goal is simple: to relieve pain, eliminate infection, and help you preserve your natural tooth for years to come.
Inside every tooth is a small space called the pulp chamber, which contains the tooth's pulp—a soft tissue made up of nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. While the pulp plays an important role during tooth development, a fully mature tooth can continue to function normally without it.
When the pulp becomes inflamed or infected due to deep decay, a crack, repeated dental procedures, or trauma, it can cause significant pain and sensitivity. Left untreated, the infection may spread beyond the tooth, leading to an abscess, bone loss, and ultimately tooth loss. Root canal treatment removes the infected or damaged pulp, carefully cleans and disinfects the inside of the tooth, and seals the root canal system to help prevent future infection. The result is a tooth that is free of infection and fully functional.
When infection persists despite root canal treatment, endodontic surgery may be the best option to save your natural tooth. The most common procedure, called an apicoectomy or root-end surgery, involves removing the infected tissue and sealing the tip of the root to promote healing.
Despite the word "surgery," an apicoectomy is a routine procedure performed under local anesthesia and is generally well tolerated by patients. At Salinas Endodontics, Dr. Malek uses advanced technology and microsurgical techniques to provide precise treatment with a focus on comfort, healing, and long-term success.
At Salinas Endodontics, we understand that dental anxiety can make treatment feel overwhelming. To help you feel comfortable and relaxed, we offer both nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oral conscious sedation.
Nitrous oxide provides mild relaxation and wears off quickly, allowing most patients to drive themselves home after treatment. For patients with moderate to severe dental anxiety, oral sedation with Halcion (triazolam) can provide a deeper level of relaxation while you remain awake and responsive throughout your procedure. During your consultation, Dr. Malek will review your medical history and help determine which sedation option is right for you.
Severe tooth pain can be overwhelming and may indicate an infection or injury involving the dental pulp. If you are experiencing significant pain, swelling, or dental trauma, please call or contact us immediately.
We understand that endodontic emergencies cannot wait. Our phones are monitored outside of regular business hours, and we make every effort to accommodate emergency patients as quickly as possible, including same-day appointments. You do not have to suffer through dental pain. We are here to help.
